There are plenty of competitive automotive segments out there, and one of the best examples is American muscle cars. In that vein, fans of the iconic Ford Mustang have more enticing options than ever for the 2018 model year. Fresh off a mid-cycle refresh, the Blue Oval has tweaked its design, upgraded its engine offerings, and created one of the most fun-to-drive pony cars on the market.

This year, the Mustang loses its V6 engine offering, but retains coupe and convertible versions for both EcoBoost and Coyote V8 engine offerings. Both mills have received upgrades, and come standard with a six-speed manual transmission with a ten-speed automatic optional. But where you can’t go wrong with either—since taste is subjective in this case—it pays to be informed.

EcoBoost Upgrades
The current generation Mustang has offered its 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four since launch, and while it still retains 310 horsepower, torque has jumped by 30 lb-ft to 350. That will certainly make for some quick acceleration, but if you want the fastest times from a stand-still, you’ll be happy to know that Line-Lock is now standard on EcoBoost models. When engaged, this system holds the front brakes for fifteen seconds for the appropriate amount of tire smoke before launch.

EcoBoost models can also be had with an impressive array of performance additions, particular in Premium guise. A Performance Package adds unique track hardware, while the GT350’s Magneride Damping system provides more cornering bite. There are also numerous other packs that add more interior features and exterior flair.

GT Upgrades
The legendary 5.0-liter Coyote V8 is the soul of the Mustang GT, and with new port injection and other mechanical fittings, its power output has increased to 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. In addition to standard Line-Lock, the GT also gets Drag Strip mode, which puts peak engine power at the forefront the whole way through the rev range. But like the EcoBoost, an even more aggressive ride—including 0-60 sprints under four seconds—can be had by equipping certain options.

A unique feature on the GT is a new add-on called Active Valve Performance Exhaust, which lets you play sound engineer with the Coyote V8’s roaring exhaust note—going so far as to hush it as to not wake the neighbors. But if you want the fastest Mustang GT you can build, equipping the GT Performance Package, 10-speed automatic transmission, and MagneRide Damping will deliver that, and a great view of your tire-smoke lingering over the starting line in your rear view mirror.
